Artist Biography 3: Stewart Baird

Stewart Baird, Photographer:
Stewart Baird is a photographic artist with a particular focus in creating High Dynamic Range (HDR) landscape photographs...

He is a photographer with over 25 years of experience, beginning with low-quality Polaroids, moving to into 35mm and finally digital medias. He is also an avid watercolourist, favouring the dynamism of that medium over more structured forms. Stewart has also worked in oils, pastels and acrylics.

Stewart has a passion to take local, New Zealand scenes and contexts into new exciting photographic expressions. His main approach to this is to follow standard compositional and tonal techniques during the capture process, then applying a painterly rigor during the digital post-processing stage.

Stewart typically takes a series of texture photographs from the surrounding environment and then uses these to breathe new life into the initial image. The results can veer into a more abstracted photograph that often resembles a painting rather than photograph. He normally presents these images on canvas media to further enhance the painting experience.
